ABOUT MANGROVE FOREST

Cambodia’s mangrove resources are under threats. Mangroves are dwindling every year due to the increase of shrimp aquaculture, industrialization and touristy development, deforestation for charcoal production, rising sea level, and the severe impact of climate changes. In 1990, mangrove area covered 82,400 hectares nationwide, while in 2005 it remained only 69,200 hectares. The loss of mangrove system spells a disaster for the local livelihood in the form of fishery, bird species, and biodiversity decline, soil erosion, salinization of coastal soil, and deterioration of clean water resource.
